WORLD ORAL HEALTH DAY 2026: A HAPPY MOUTH IS A HAPPY LIFE

The Intercountry Centre for Oral Health for Africa joins the global community in commemorating World Oral Health Day 2026, bringing renewed attention to the importance of oral health across the African region.

Oral diseases remain among the most common and preventable health conditions, yet they continue to affect a significant proportion of the population, causing pain, discomfort and avoidable impacts on daily life. As noted in regional insights shared by Dr Mohamed Janabi the Director General WHO/AFRO region, limited access to essential services and insufficient prevention measures continue to drive this burden.

Oral diseases remain among the most widespread and largely preventable health conditions, yet they continue to affect a significant proportion of the population. They cause pain, discomfort, and unnecessary disruptions to daily life. As highlighted in regional insights by Dr. Mohamed Janabi, Director-General, World Health Organization Afro Region, limited access to essential oral health services and inadequate preventive measures continue to drive this burden.

In the Director/CEO’s message, the Intercountry Centre for Oral Health for Africa emphasized practical and achievable steps toward improving oral health. Referencing this year’s theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” as set by the FDI World Dental Federation, he highlighted that oral diseases such as tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancers can significantly affect individual well-being and family life.

He further stressed that maintaining good oral health does not have to be complex. Simple measures, including brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, maintaining a healthy diet and making regular visits to dental clinics, can go a long way in preventing these conditions and promoting healthier communities.

We invite you to watch the Director’s video message for his full remarks and key recommendations.

As part of the Oral Health Week commemoration, a series of activities have been planned. Kindly refer to the attached flyers for more details and participation opportunities.

The ICOH wishes everyone a happy World Oral Health Day, encouraging all to take simple steps toward a healthier mouth and a healthier life.
