A Significant Milestone for Oral Health in Nigeria and Africa

The approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of the bill for the establishment of a National Centre for Oral Health marks a significant milestone in the advancement of oral healthcare, research, training, and policy in Nigeria.

For decades, the Intercountry Centre for Oral Health (ICOH) for Africa has remained committed to strengthening oral health across the African region through research, capacity building, demonstration programmes, and regional collaboration. This development further underscores the growing recognition of oral health as an essential component of overall health and sustainable national development.

The establishment of a National Centre for Oral Health presents an important opportunity to strengthen evidence-based research, enhance workforce development, improve access to quality oral healthcare, and foster stronger collaboration among institutions and countries across the region.

This milestone is more than a policy achievement. It is a reflection of the collective efforts of stakeholders who have consistently advocated for greater attention to oral health and its integration into broader health systems. Sustained investment in oral health has the potential to improve quality of life, strengthen health systems, reduce the burden of preventable diseases, and contribute to healthier and more productive communities.

ICOH for Africa commends the Federal Government of Nigeria and all stakeholders whose commitment and efforts continue to advance the oral health agenda in Nigeria and across Africa.

As we look towards the future, ICOH remains committed to supporting research, capacity building, innovation, and regional collaboration that will contribute to achieving better oral health outcomes for populations across Africa.

Oral health is public health, and investing in oral health is investing in our collective future.
